Troubleshoot your Xbox Wireless Controller
PC Troubleshooting
Make sure your windows version is up to date.
Check your cable connections
- Try to disconnect other devices and see if the issue persists.
- Try disconnecting all other USB devices.
- Try connecting the controller directly to the PC. (Do not use a USB switch or hub).
- Change the USB port the controller is plugged into.
- Unpair (remove device) controller from windows under Bluetooth & other devices and reconnect (pair) controller to windows via Bluetooth.
Controller Update for PC
For Xbox controllers, you can do this using the Xbox Accessories app on PC or Xbox. Check online for manufacturer instructions on doing this for third-party controllers best.
Update the controller through Device Manager. (PC)
- Plug the controller in.
- Press the Windows Key and then type Device Manager.
- Scroll down and find your controller device. We will use the 'Xbox 360 Peripherals' option for this example.
- Click it to expand the dropdown list.
- Right-Click your device again for this example; it is Xbox 360 Controller for Windows
- Select Update Driver and choose Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software
- Lunch the game and try the controller again.
Power cycle your controller
- Press and hold the Xbox button for 5-10 seconds, until the controller turns off.
- Wait a few seconds, then press and hold the Xbox button again to turn the controller back on.
Disable Steam controller layouts and conversion
- Disable any Steam controller emulator/conversion
- Open Steam and then click on the Steam settings on the top right
- Scroll down to Controller, then disable all settings for external controllers except the controller you're using (Playstation or Switch)

Controller Update For Xbox
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Under Profile & system, select Settings.
- Under Devices & connections, select Accessories.
- On the Xbox Wireless Controller screen, select “…” to check the firmware version for your controller.
- If it says there’s no update available, your controller is current. If it says “Update,” follow the steps provided.
- Once your controller is updated, disconnect the USB cable and try connecting wirelessly again.
